At Home with a Modern Design: Contemporary Architecture

At Home with a Modern Design: Contemporary Architecture

Is modern and contemporary the same thing? Not exactly. In terms of interior design, modern design refers to a specific time period. Essentially it is a style known as “Mid-century Modern” that was created around the 20s through the 50s. Modern design was known for a bright open, airy feeling. Generally floors were bare and of natural materials. Colors were used in moderation allowing natural materials to stand out.

Contemporary, of course, means what is popular now. Ironically, the use of “modern” design plays heavily in contemporary design and architecture.

Some elements of contemporary design are:

  • Natural materials. Such things as natural wood floors and granite countertops are good examples of sustainable materials that are pure and “of the earth”. Despite all of our modern conveniences today, there is a large movement of those who want to live in a way that re-connects them with the earth and nature. Surrounding themselves with natural materials in the home is one such way of doing so.
  • Heavy focus on environmental issues has led to a change in the way homes are built. Contemporary design incorporates use of recycled materials, in addition to natural as mentioned above. Large windows and skylights also play a big part in contemporary design, allowing more natural light and passive heat into the home.
  • Multi-functional, yet stylish choices are also popular nowadays. Smaller homes and apartments make good use of limited space. Designers and architects have answered homeowner’s call by bringing many innovative solutions that provide functionality and appeal within such limited square footage. Space-saving furniture continues this philosophy with such things as loft beds, hidden storage and transforming furniture pieces.
  • The kitchen plays a larger part as the focal point of the home. For example, kitchens are now being designed to be more open and flexible with space to do more than just eat. Essentially, in many homes nowadays, it is the hub of all activity. Relaxation, conversation, studying and school projects often take place in today’s kitchens.
  • The outdoors plays a large part in contemporary architecture. Outdoor living spaces have become more and more popular.
